TAMINO SUN MAY SHINE

If you’re yet to be acquainted with the Belgian-Egyptian musician Tamino, then now is your opportunity to discover this impossibly brilliant talent, who has been quietly gathering a steady following of fans over the past few years. He’s played festivals and shows throughout Europe, holding each audience in a mesmeric grip with his penchant for storytelling that swings between reality and illusion. Tamino has just re-released a selection of his best songs ‘Habibi’, ‘Indigo Night’ and ‘Cigar’ as part of the Habibi EP, but for pre-existing listeners an addition of new single ‘Sun May Shine’ has given us even more reason to pay attention to Tamino. It’s as distinct in style as the other tracks; those descending notes, mournful tone, pitch shifts akin to North African and Middle Eastern singers, lyrical honesty and so on. However, ‘Sun May Shine’ is arguably richer in production; more dramatic with those orchestral bursts; more brooding with the electronic beats and layered vocal samples. This track conveys Tamino’s growth into a musician to stand the test of time, holding onto his ageless songwriting, while embracing contemporary textures. - Hannah Thacker
